Plains Pipe (lead inlay)

The plains pipe represents the most common style of ceremonial pipe used- from the western Ohio Valley to the Rockies, and from the Arkansas River to the pains of southern Canada. Originally, pipes were inlaid with lead by melting lead bullets and pounding the lead into the grooves of the pipe. Some say that these lead inlay pipes were carried in protection of the children. Now they are inlaid with silver solder. Size and shape varies as each pipe is hand carved. The photo is a representative sample. Approximate size: Stem: 25" (63 cm) long, bowl: 5" (12 cm) long, together: 30" (75cm) long
