With sharp fangs and a menacing pose, the Balinese dragon arches its scaly neck. A traditional guardian of the Gods, the fierce creature boasts a bearded chin and jagged spikes along its spine. Ketut Taram sculpts a dragon head in extraordinary detail, its ominous beauty expressed in warm suar wood.
Ketut Taram, the artist, was born in the Gianyar regency, Bali, in 1967. He learned to create his first sculpture from his older brother. He enjoys sculpturing in suar wood and sandalwood.
"Balinese culture and tradition inspire my artwork. As the son of Wayan Kicen, a wood carver, it is easy and enjoyable for me to transfer my imagination into my work. "I began carving on my own in 1992, saving until I had enough money to open my own workshop. There are five people working with me now.
